The Eameses recognized the advantages of the material and consistently utilized them: malleability, strength, pleasant feel, and suitability for industrial processing. With this material, previously unknown in the furniture industry, they succeeded in developing their shell designs for mass production. After their initial presentation at the Museum of Modern Art's "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition in 1948, the plastic shells with armrests (A-shell) and the simple seat shells (S-shell) were launched in 1950 – the first mass-produced plastic chairs in furniture history. The Eames Plastic Chairs also established a furniture type that remains widespread today: the multifunctional chair, whose shell can be combined with various bases depending on the intended use.
